Notes from the underground

Hello out there! It’s been a while since we’ve gotten update you all. It’s been a tough year, not just for us but for the whole world, a lot of time for introspection. Music is a double edged sword — on the one hand it’s what keeps us feeling fulfilled, and in the case of 2020, feeling sane. On the other hand, it can be really hard work. You start something new that feels special and it’s like you’re floating on air. But getting it to the place where it feels ready for the world requires patience, both for us and anyone looking forward to hearing it. Sometimes it takes a while for the right pieces to fall into place.

You churn through things so much, sometimes you wonder what it’s for. But if 2020 did anything, it put that question into clear focus; it’s all about fostering human connection. That’s the thing every person in the world has yearned for collectively. For making music though, that’s always been the case regardless of the year — it’s just been amplified.

The first part of that connection is with each other — my brother and I aren’t able to physically see each other as much as we’d like, but collaborating on this music is a way to feel connected that a phone call simply can’t replicate. It’s a charge of energy that flows back and forth, unbounded by social distance. When lacking in physical contact with friends, this is addictive, and a driving force behind how much we got done in the past year.

The second part of that is with you, our fans. I would equate that feeling in two ways. First, just by you playing one of our tracks, it’s almost like I’ve just told you a secret that I know I can trust you with — something I’ve been wanting to get off my chest. It’s a sense of relief, and also gratitude that I have someone like you to tell it to. The second way I can describe that feeling is like making a gift for someone special — you’ve been thinking about it for months, toiling away in secret. Then finally comes the moment you get to give it to them, watching to see the look on their face. Then if you really nailed it, the big payoff — seeing them use the gift in the future. Hopefully it’s the thing they didn’t even know they needed, and not the ill-fitting sweater you’ve spent months knitting!

Well, I’m here to tell you about the thing you didn’t know you needed — and you didn’t know you needed it because it’s been so damn long since we’ve released anything. But after a year of intense work, we are ready to share some new music with you, and our debut solo LP this spring. Stay tuned and I hope it will find you well!
